The high school selection process is an exciting time for 8th graders. The experience is marked by campus visits, shadow days, preparing their applications and essays, and… the dreaded entrance exam.
There is no need to fear, however. High school entrance exams offer a fantastic opportunity for students to hone their study skills and solidify the major concepts of middle school to prepare them for higher learning.
In my many years of helping students prepare for these tests, I have learned that the most successful approach to conquering the exam is to employ a slow and steady wins the race strategy.
I have created this course because I understand that a student’s familiarity and time spent with the exam holds the key to their success. Together, we will climb this mountain by thoroughly covering the entire exam and all of its content and pitfalls so that there are no surprises. Using a methodical approach, we take the questions one by one and discuss how to answer each one correctly.
At first glance, students are shocked by how foreign the questions feel to them. Whether it is vocabulary, math, reading, English language, or essay writing, all students need time and coaching to adjust to the format of the test and develop the skills necessary to answer the questions confidently and accurately.
As months go by, students become more confident with the material and are able to answer the questions on their own with precision. I teach them how to employ energy and time-saving techniques so that they execute a strategy on test day that allows them to focus and maintain their composure.
In this course, students will learn how to:
Methodically approach a large, long-term project and break it up into small, achievable chunks
Answer each type of question in each of the five exam sections accurately
Write essays that are well-organized and highlight their character and values
Utilize strategies that increase accuracy and save energy and time
Arrive on exam day feeling prepared and confident
Through it all, I will share insider tips that I have accumulated from working directly with students for over 14 years.
Meetings* to prepare for the HSPT will be held live, online via Zoom on Monday evenings from 7:30-8:30 PM Pacific Time from mid-September 2019 to early January 2020. Recordings will be available if a student has to miss a week. Cost of course series is $687.
